Billing & plans
Plans, what each includes, how billing cycles work, what counts as overage, and how to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel.
Billing lives under Settings → Account → Plan & billing. Your current plan, usage this cycle, a running overage estimate, and your spending cap are all shown there. Invoices, payment methods, and past charges are handled in Stripe's billing portal, which opens from a button on that page. This article is the conceptual map — for exact numbers, the dashboard is always the source of truth (prices and limits change over time).
The four plans, in plain English
- Demo — free, 7-day window. Shared phone number, hard-stop on minutes and SMS, no booking, no analytics. For trying the product, not running a business on it.
- Starter — the complete AI receptionist. Dedicated number, real call minutes included, booking turned on, SMS confirmations, basic insights. Annual cadence is the headline price; monthly costs a little more.
- Professional — adds the intelligence layer. Higher minutes ceiling, weekly AI Insights briefing, drift suggestions, full analytics, and email follow-ups. Same dedicated-number model as Starter, with a bigger concurrent-call ceiling.
- Enterprise — custom. Outbound campaigns, multi-location, white-label, CRM integrations. Everything unlimited; pricing set per contract.
What counts as a "minute"
Minutes count from the moment your AI picks up to the moment the call ends. A 90-second call counts as 1.5 minutes. Calls that hit voicemail (where your AI never engages) don't consume AI minutes — only carrier time. Manual test calls from the dashboard also count toward your monthly minutes on paid plans, the same as a real customer call.
How billing cycles work
- 1Your cycle starts the day your subscription begins (the first paid charge, or the first day after trial).
- 2It rolls every month on the same day. If you signed up the 15th, every cycle runs the 15th-to-14th.
- 3Included minutes, SMS, and the campaign-email allowance reset to zero on each cycle rotation. Anything you didn't use doesn't roll over. Transactional email (booking confirmations and reminders) is uncapped on paid plans, so there's nothing to reset there.
- 4Invoices issue at the start of the next cycle, including any minutes + SMS overage from the cycle that just closed.
What costs extra
Two metrics meter overage on Starter and Professional: AI minutes (at the plan rate per minute) and outbound SMS (at $0.03 per message past your included pool). Transactional email (booking confirmations and reminders) is uncapped at no additional cost; campaign/bulk email has a per-cycle allowance that hard-stops with no overage charge. Bookings and lead capture are unlimited at no additional cost. The unified overage cap on Settings → Plan & billing is your safety rail — once total overage (minutes + SMS combined) would exceed your cap, further SMS sends pause until the cycle rolls or you raise the cap.
How to use Settings → Plan & billing
- 1See your current plan, what cycle you're in, and how much of each limit you've used so far this cycle.
- 2Upgrade — the "Upgrade to…" button on the plan card opens the Choose-your-plan page, where the monthly ↔ annual cadence toggle lives (annual saves money per month). An upgrade takes effect immediately, prorated for the remaining days in the current cycle so you don't pay for full Pro on a half-used Starter month. A cadence switch applies at the next renewal, not mid-cycle.
- 3Downgrade — handled through Stripe's billing portal (the "Manage subscription" button); it takes effect at the end of the current cycle. Your old limits stay in place until renewal so a downgrade doesn't cut you off mid-month.
- 4Set an overage cap — the highest total overage (minutes + SMS combined) you're willing to allow per cycle. Once you hit your cap, additional calls drop to voicemail (system fallback, not your AI) and outbound SMS pauses until next cycle or until you raise the cap. Defaults are conservative; raise it if you regularly burst past your included minutes or SMS pool.
- 5Open the Stripe billing portal — the "Manage subscription" button hands off to Stripe, where you update your payment method, view and download past invoices, and see your billing history. Cards are tokenized by Stripe; EMOR never sees the number.
Common questions
What happens when I hit my minutes cap?
On Starter and Professional, you start accruing overage at the plan's per-minute rate. Calls keep flowing — your AI doesn't shut off mid-cycle — but the extra minutes show up on the next invoice. If you set an overage cap and hit it, additional calls route to voicemail until the cycle rolls or you raise the cap.
What happens when I hit my SMS cap?
On Starter and Professional, your AI keeps sending — each message past the included pool bills at $0.03 per send through the unified overage pool. A missed appointment confirmation is worse than a few cents of overage, so the system doesn't hard-stop SMS mid-cycle. The unified overage cap is the safety rail: once total overage (minutes + SMS) would exceed your cap, further SMS sends pause until the cycle rolls or you raise the cap. On Demo, SMS hard-stops at the included limit with no overage allowed.
Is there a cap on email?
It depends on the type. Transactional email — booking confirmations and reminders — is uncapped on Starter and Professional; raw SendGrid cost is small enough that metering it would cost more in billing UX than the email itself, and it's self-limited (you can't send more confirmations than you take calls). List email (re-engagement, announcements, anything sent to a list of contacts) has its own per-cycle pool — 1,000 on Starter, 2,000 on Professional — and hard-stops at the limit with no overage charge. It's sized at 2× your SMS pool because list email is purely additive (your SMS pool also covers confirmations and reminders). The cap protects deliverability on the shared sending domain and keeps the product honest: EMOR is a receptionist, not a marketing platform. Burst protection on both lives at the rate-limiter, so a runaway script can't blast through your contacts. On Demo, email is disabled entirely.
How many calls can my AI handle at the same time?
Each phone number you add can take multiple calls at once — there's no per-number limit. Your plan includes a shared pool of simultaneous calls across all your numbers combined: 5 on Starter, 10 on Professional, 20 on Enterprise. If every slot in that pool is in use the moment a new call comes in, that caller is offered a voicemail so the lead is still captured — but in practice this is rare for most small businesses. Peak concurrency on the Analytics tab shows the highest simultaneous-call count you've hit this cycle, so you can see how close you've come.
Can I change plan mid-cycle?
Yes. Upgrades take effect immediately with a prorated charge for the remainder of the cycle. Downgrades take effect at the start of the next cycle so you don't get cut off from features you're still using.
I cancelled but my AI is still answering — is that a bug?
No. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your paid cycle. You keep service for what you already paid for; renewal just doesn't happen. The day after your cycle ends, your AI stops taking new calls and your number reverts to wherever you forward it.
I want to keep my data but pause my account.
There's no pause yet. Cancel + reactivate is the closest path — Settings → Privacy & data has the reset/delete controls but doesn't pause billing. If your business is seasonal, talk to support about a custom arrangement.
Where do I see what I've been charged?
Settings → Plan & billing shows the current cycle's in-progress charges — minutes and SMS used, plus an itemized overage estimate so far. For past invoices and downloadable PDFs, click "Manage subscription" to open Stripe's billing portal, which holds your full billing history.
I have multiple businesses — can I run them on one account?
Not on Starter or Professional. Multi-location is an Enterprise capability — talk to support if you need it.
Does the trial roll into a paid plan automatically?
No. The demo gives you 7 days of access with a hard usage cap and ends — you choose Starter or Professional to keep going. No card on file during the trial means no automatic charge.
